MINUTES OF THE NOV 10 MEETING:

The meeting was started with the Pledge and Promise.  The treasurer reported a balance of $3,229.04 in the account.

Lois reported that all Girl FSP orders were turned in and the product is due to be delivered to her on December 1.  Please pick up your orders between 3:00 and 7:00 at Lois’s house.

Pam reported on the Juliette Low Birthday Party.  All the children in attendance enjoyed the games and cupcakes.  The parents felt it was well organized and spent the time looking at the information displays and memorabilia.

TRIM-A-TREE DECEMBER 10:  Julie and Jennifer reported that donations for the homeless are still being collected at the grade schools.  There will be three activities for the girls to participate and they may hang an ornament on the tree as they leave.  Ornaments should have each girl’s name and troop number so they may be returned in January.

Father/Daughter Committee met before the Service Unit meeting.  Theme for the dance will be “Winter Sweetheart” and it will held on February 18 at the High School from 6:30-9:00 pm.  Cost will be $5/person.  Dress is semi-formal.

We are still collecting new toys for the Christhole House project, and stocking stuffers for the Women’s Prison project.  These may be dropped off at Sharon’s house.  The Service Unit will be donating the leftover toys from the Juliette Low Birthday Party to these projects.

Lucy B reminded the Service Unit that Greenwood Aglow is November 19 at 5:30 pm at the Greenwood Library.  The City Christmas Tree at the corner of Main and Madison will be lighted that evening.  Please encourage your troops to participate (and wear their uniforms!).

Troop 891 will be visiting a local nursing home on 21 November at 4:00 pm.  They will be giving small stuffed animals to the residents.  Contact Stefanie if you would like to contribute, or if you have a troop that would like to join hers in this visit.

Kathy reminded us that Troop Cookie Captain training is January 9 and the sale begins January 14.  The theme this year is “Be Brilliant” and we will kick off the sale with a Cookie Rally on January 13 from 7:00-8:30.  Information will be forthcoming.

Nan is doing a training on December 3 for leaders.  This will be a craft training and you will be making fleece blankets.  Contact Nan for information on how much fleece to buy and to sign up for this training.  These blankets are easy to make and you could easily share the craft with your girls. (They would make great Christmas gifts; or in smaller sizes, receiving blankets to donate to Troop 1331’s Newborn Kits).

Eunice was not available to present information from the Council, but asked Nan to talk about Volunteer Recognitions.  Final deadline for nominations is February 1, so NOW is the time to be writing that nomination letter and rounding up the references required for the awards.  These can be sent directly to Sharon or Eunice.

The meeting concluded with an investiture of new leaders and the WAGGGS Pin Candle Ceremony.

NOTES FROM THE CHAIR:   A REMINDER -- Our Service Unit is collecting for the following service projects:

1. Christhole House.  This is an organization that provides homes for handicapped children. Their funding provides for the basic necessities of life, but nothing more.  We are collecting NEW toys for these children.  This is a project that will be ongoing for the entire Scout Year and will not end at Christmas.

2.  Women's Prison Stocking Stuffers.  The Women's Prison makes stockings for the children of the poorest IPS districts.  The more items we collect, the more children will have a happier Christmas holiday.

 3.  Trim-A-Tree Homeless Project.  Trim-A-Tree this year is focusing on service to the community and has chosen the homeless of Johnson County as its beneficiary.  We are collecting new or used, good winter coats, hats, mittens and gloves, socks, blankets, for all ages - men, women and children.

4.  Stuffed Animals for IPS.  Troop 1183 is again collecting new and gently used stuffed animals for the IPS schools to give to children in their poorest districts.  Contact Lois for information on where to donate and when she needs the items.

5.  Operation Happy Paws.  Troop 723 is collecting new and clean, used socks for this project.  They are making cat toys to be donated to the animal shelters and Humane Society.  Contact Nan for more information.

6.  Wishard Hospital Newborn Kits.  Troop 1331 is collecting new and gently used, clean receiving blankets, caps and booties, new pacifiers, etc. This project is an after-Christmas project.  Contact Angie for more information.

As Girl Scouts, we promise to "serve God, and my country; and to help people at all times".  This is never more true than at this time of the year.  The recent factory closings in Johnson County, along with the rising cost of gasoline, food, and other necessities have devastated some of our most needy families.  I realize we have all given with the recent disasters in Louisiana and Mississippi, Pakistan and Evansville, but if you could please give just a little more to make our Service Projects a success it will be greatly appreciated.  Pass this information along to your extended families, co-workers, church members, even local businesses that you frequent and ask them to donate as well.  As you buy gifts for your family, add an item for one of our Service Projects.  It doesn't have to cost a lot of money (believe me, you can buy a lot with a little at some of the dollar stores!) but it will be so appreciated by those who will receive it.

There is no Service Team or Service Unit meeting in December.  Have a safe and happy Christmas, Hannukah, Kwaanza, or whatever Holiday you celebrate.  I look forward to seeing you in January.
