Notes from the Chair:
“committee – a group of
people officially delegated to perform a function such as investigating,
considering, reporting or acting on a matter.” – The American Heritage Dictionary, © 1994
Houghton Mifflin Co.
When you volunteer to
chair or participate in a Service Unit committee, you are agreeing to plan,
budget, and carry out an event. The
committee should work together to decide exactly what activities will take
place, how much it’s going to cost, and arrange for troops/volunteers to work
and make the event successful. Input
from the Service Unit is welcome, but the final decisions should be made by the
committee. Not everybody is going to be
happy with all decisions – that is a fact of life. But everybody had an opportunity to
work on every committee and only a few chose to do so.
We have some new
committees this year and some new people working on old committees. Let’s allow the committees to do their
jobs. Encourage their creativity, fresh
ideas, and support the events they plan.
If something doesn’t work, we will have learned from the experience and
know not to do that again. Yes, Girl
Scouting is about tradition – but all traditions were
just new ideas once.

As
a Reminder:
“A little girl watched her mother prepare a roast for
dinner. Before putting it into the pan,
her mother chopped off a small piece on the end of the roast. The little girl asked her why and the answer
was, “Because that’s the way my mom always did it”. So the little girl went to her grandmother
and asked why she chopped off the end of the roast before putting it into the
pan, and the answer again was “Because that’s the way my mom always did
it”. Finally the little girl went to her
great-grandmother and asked her why she always cut off the end of the roast
before putting it into the pan, and the answer was “Because that’s the only way
it would fit the pan”.”
